Babies, Oils, & What You Need to Know

Unfortunately, there are as many petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances, and hormone disrupting ingredients in baby cosmetics as there are in household products. The Environmental Working Group has found up to 287 chemicals in newborn umbilical cord blood, all of which can be linked to cancer, toxic to the nervous system, and have potential to cause birth defects. It takes 26 seconds for chemicals in our personal cosmetics or household products to enter baby's blood stream. Knowing theses things is why I choose to use oils with my littles.

Because I know better now, I am doing better for the sweet babies.

Using essential oils on babies and littles is not only safe, but a great alternative to either suffering through issues OR using over the counter options that can be filled with harmful, scary ingredients. Yes, you want to be smart and dilute properly (1-3 drops EO per 10 ml carrier), and watch for any sensitivity, but oils are an amazing natural way to support your love's physical and emotional health. Gentle, natural solutions that are HIGHLY effective rescue a mama in need! Essential Oils have the power to calm, soothe, support, aide in sleep and immune health, and more- this is what I base my decision on.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I only use and trust Young Living oils since they are guaranteed pure, and I know where they come from! I know each batch is tested thoroughly and the Seed to Seal difference, this is especially important with babies.

Myth: They aren't safe

Again, I wouldn't trust just any brand for my little one but Young Living and their Seed to Seal promise makes all the difference. Seed to Seal means the from the time the seed is planted until the bottle is sealed, we as consumers are welcome to see the process.

"Seed to Seal is our commitment that helps ensure that with every pure essential oil and Young Living product your family uses, you’re enjoying the benefits of our global resources, industry leadership, and over two decades of innovation. The result? A pristine final product that you know has been created with conscientious Sourcing, Science, and Standards—the three pillars of Seed to Seal."- Young Living

Wipes: For their little bums; can also be used as dryer sheets and make-up removing wipes (#momhack)

Baby Lotion: every evening before bed. It helps soothe them to sleep, especially accompanied by a drop of lavender and a gentle massage.

Baby Oil: Works wonders for cradle cap, baby acne, and smells dreamy! Safely apply to their face, head, problem areas daily!

Diaper Cream: clears up a rash quicker than the prescription cream we used for 3 months due to a very sensitive tummy. Another mom hack, you can use it safely around your eyes to reduce wrinkles and the appearance of any sleep deprivation.

Bath Wash: So gentle, and makes them smell so good when your snuggling them before bed.

Linen Spray: for blankets, sheets, and clothes! Like fabric freshener but better, safer.

Solutions for the Most Common Issues: Roller Blends

To Note: there is not a "right or wrong" way to combine oils together, and your combination will not explode! BUT diluting properly is essential due to the nature and purity of the oils. You can always do a patch test on babies skin before lathering them in it to ensure they do not have some kind of reaction.

Just a little more specific age/drops for tiny ones: newborn (0-6 months) 1-3 drops oil, Baby (6 months- 18 months) 2-6 drops oil, Toddler (18 months- 3 years) 3- 8 drops oil, Littles (3-5 years) 8-12 drops oil, 5 &6 year olds 10-15 drops oil

Sleep:

1 drop peace & calming + 2 drops lavender topped with carrier oil (almond, jojoba, coconut, etc) and rolled on to bottoms of feet.

I also like to add a drop of lavender to the Seedlings baby lotion and massage it all over her back and belly, we have been doing this since she was 3 months old. I only waited that long because it was the first time I heard about the Seedlings line! My child loves bed time. and this is not me bragging, I know I am blessed and OILS WORK because since she was 3 months old she has slept all night every night unless she has been sick or teething awful.

Teething:

1-2 drops lavender + 1-2 drops Copaiba topped with carrier and rolled on jaw line

Copaiba + vegetable oil directly on gums, I used vegetable oil the first 12 months in case of a nut allergy (almond oil risk)

Colic:

I will disclaimer this with: Elizabeth never had colic so I do not know from PERSONAL experience, but I've done a lot of research and these are the suggestions I have found!

-Gentle baby diluted with carrier oil massaged into baby's tummy and low back

-Fennel, Lavender, German Chamomile used the same way

- Lavender, Orange, and Geranium applied to tummy and back

- Lavender and Orange clockwise on the tummy every 30 minutes

* The massage helps in case the cause is associated with gas

Tantrums:

We've experimented with most of these blends as the "terrible 2's" are quickly approaching my 16 month old, and not all have worked for us, but they may work for you! (I will BOLD the ones that we love! )

- Happy Baby:

1-2 drops orange + 1 drop lavender(diluted) on the bottoms of the feet

-Calm Baby

3-5 drops Lavender + Frankincense (diluted) on the collar of her shirt so she is smelling it all day, also safe for massaging on her chest and feet

- Toddler Tantrums:

1 drop Valor, 2 drops Lavender, 1 drop Frankincense (diluted)

baby love has BIG feelings and no way to communicate them since she doesn't understand them, sometimes the girl needs a little Valor to ground her and help her cope with all she feels in her heart of hearts.

-This is Fine:

Lavender, Frankincense, and Peace & Calming (diluted) and rolled on her spine and feet

Tummy:

Digize Vitality helps with all things tummy! Rub right on tummy (3 drops/ 1 tbsp carrier oil) or add a drop to juice to speed things up or slow things down.

Constipation/Diarrhea:

- 1 drop each Rosemary, Ginger, and Wild Orange with 2 tbsp of coconut oil and massage on belly and feet

- 1 drop Peppermint,1 drop Lemon, and 1 drop Digize diluted and rolled on tummy and low back (6 months & up*)

*Be Mindful of "Hot Oils" when creating Rollers for babies!

"Hot oils are oils that can cause a hot or warming sensation when applied to the skin. Examples of hot oils and blends include Cinnamon, Clove, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme, Exodus II™, and Thieves®. For some people, Peppermint’s cooling sensation can be too intense. Young Living recommends using a patch test procedure prior to first use. To perform a patch test, apply 1–2 drops of essential oil to a patch of skin such as the forearm. Observe that area of skin over the course of 1–2 hours for any noticeable reaction; however, reactions occur usually within 5–10 minutes. If you experience a hot or burning sensation or develop a rash, add V-6 or another carrier oil to the affected area as often as needed."- Young Living

Diffuser Blends:

Playroom:

3 drops Wild Orange, 3 drops Lavender

Play Happy:

3 drops Bergamot, 3 drops Wild Orange

Fresh Air:

3 drops Bergamot, 2 drops Lemon

Immune Support:

3 drops Frankincense, 2 drops Tea Tree (Melaluca)
