A couple years ago, I shared our trip to my Dad's lodge on the blog. Well... now you get the chance to be his neighbor. He is offering up one of the 3 properties he owns on his 140 acre farm. And this little gem could be yours. Here is the beautiful history written by part owner Tina Chambliss.
If you would like to “get away,” surrounded by pristine land and water, and a house that is incredibly private and unique, this is your new home!
Located at the end of a dead end road, with a gated drive, and a steep mountain to your back, thirty minutes to a “real town/Morristown,” this property has its own (spring) water source, plus it’s set up for sustainability (solar panels with battery pack, solar hot water heater, wood burning outdoor furnace that heats the home and the home’s water during the winter, with wood supplied by the property from existing deadwood…all of which equal really low power bills when they are usually the highest in TN, and, you will never lose power!). There is a spring house that holds a 500-gallon water tank, and is large enough to put up shelving around the tank in order to create an above ground “root cellar.”
When the property was purchased ten years ago, the current owners were the third owners of record
ever, and the property, and water, were tested extensively for any and all contaminants (of which none
were found). There are two cleared – one fenced – fields, that are currently being utilized for hay.
The mountain behind the house has never been timbered, to the best of our knowledge, and a deed
restriction will ensure that it never does, as it is an “old growth” forest, and supports many healthy
trees, plants and animals (lots of wild turkeys, deer, birds of all kinds, plus an occasional black bear…we
are told by the locals, but we have never seen one…and a few other wanted, and sometimes unwanted,
critters…it is in the woods in East TN!), which deserve not to be disturbed, as well as helps to slow down
erosion from the water that cascades from the mountain during the rainy season and the occasional
winter snows…pushing the water into the creek that runs from the spring, in front of the house, and
onto adjoining properties all the way down the road.
There is a small, stocked, spring fed pond on the property, with a gazebo overlooking same, which are
both across from the 160+ year old barn (which has a fenced in barn lot, and built-in stalls). The barn
was on the Appalachian Quilt Trail (it would just have to be re-applied for…the “quilt” is still on the
barn). The barn was the original barn for the 160+ year old log cabin that is part of the house (the
“new” part of the house was built as an “addition” to the log cabin by the previous owner). There is also
another small spring house in front of the log cabin portion of the house that was made/utilized by the
original family on the property, using the rocks from the property…so you can literally “step back in time” whenever you would like! The log cabin currently acts as guest suite (living/sleeping areas,
upstairs and down), with a handicapped accessible bathroom with a shower just outside the door of the
cabin, and a gas powered “wood” stove in what was the old fireplace within.
The living room has a gas fireplace, and the kitchen has a gas stove (all gas appliances are supported by a 500-gallon propane tank), and a tremendous amount of storage area and counter space, and the dining room is large enough for a table for 8, plus some!
The “new” part of the house has wood ceilings and floors (wood floors only, upstairs), as well as tile on
the floors in the kitchen and dining room, and includes one bedroom and one bathroom (plus a guest
room) upstairs…the “master” bedroom and the bathroom, together, are larger than most one-bedroom
apartments…and the master bath has an incredible shower, plus a jacuzzi bathtub, encased in wood,
with a large seating/storage area and two walk-in closets.
There is a “tiki” room just off the dining room, with a bar and grills, that leads to an enormous deck (the
back yard is fenced in, in case you have a pup or two) overlooking the pond and the barn and the rest of
the property…party time, or, just relaxation time!
Attached to the house is also a heated workshop, and a greenhouse, with power and water (with a sink
and a shower, for when you want to get cleaned up from hiking or working outside before you come
inside).
This property allows you the opportunity to leave once a month for “necessities,” if that is all of the
outside world you would like to see (there are a couple of little stores within 10 minutes that you can
visit when you run out of perishables…and the local power company has recently brought in the lines to
set up fiber high speed internet within a month or two [currently there is relatively high speed internet
available through the phone company]), or it’s an approximately 30 minute drive to Morristown, or 45+
minute drive to Knoxville (depending on which part of town you are headed to).
Retire (where there is no state income tax), and enjoy the peace and quiet, or work from home, and
enjoy the peace and quiet, or work “in town” and come home to the peace and quiet…anyway you look!
